What’s That Sound?

We escaped the blazing hot temperatures in Mesa, Arizona. On Thursday morning, we finished packing up with a goal of hitting the road by 10am. I secured Midget-San in the trailer at 9:59am and we were on our way. It was already 92 degrees on a day that was forecast reach 105 degrees. I had the generator running so we could keep the roof mounted air conditioner on while we drove.

Our route took us over Usery Pass to Bush Highway, then up the Beeline Highway to Payson. Payson is at an elevation of 5,000 feet above sea level. The Beeline has several long, steep grades followed by steep downgrades. The net result is a gain of almost 4,000 feet in elevation over the 75-mile drive. With the high ambient temperature, I kept a close eye on our engine coolant temperature. On the hardest grades, I manually shifted down to third gear to keep the engine revs up around 1,900-2,100 rpm. The higher revs keep the radiator fan turning fast and the coolant circulating quickly. I usually cruise at 1,500-1,550 rpm. It was slow going at around 40 mph, but the coolant temperature remained around 200 degrees.

From Payson, we traveled east on AZ260 90 miles to Show Low, gaining another 1,500 feet or so in elevation. From Show Low, we hit US60 for the final leg of about 50 miles to Springerville. We’re at Springerville RV Park about a mile east of town on US60 – 12 miles or so from the New Mexico border and about 80 miles south of I-40. We’re at an elevation of about 7,080 feet above sea level.

Springerville RV Park is a small, clean park without any frills or amenities – other than a good free wifi signal! The park is just over two years old and is owned by the the people that own a sister park in Cortez, Colorado. We have a long, level pull-through site, so I didn’t have to drop the trailer. The site isn’t paved, it’s covered in crushed volcanic rock and a bit dusty.

On Friday morning, Donna and I took a drive to have a look around the area. We went south on US191 and drove past Nelson Reservoir. We saw people fishing and kayaking there. We think we might want to take our Sea Eagle inflatable kayak up there at some point.

We drove over the Alpine Divide at 8,550 feet above sea level and dropped into the Alpine Valley and checked out the little town of Alpine. On our return trip, we made a slight detour and drove through the small town of Nutrioso. We came back through Eagar – Eagar connects to Springerville and is the larger town of the two. We found the Bashas and Safeway grocery stores there.

Later, Donna went for walk into town. Walking down South Gutierrez Street and she found an interesting sight. It was a number of sculptures in an otherwise empty lot, all made from old car parts. She learned later that the sculptures were made by John Welhelm – his ranch is right across the street. She took several photos of the art.

It just goes to show you – you can find points of interest almost anywhere in this great country.

On Friday afternoon, a pair of motorhomes entered the park and set up in the two empty sites on the driver’s side of our coach. We hoped this would give us a wind break as the wind has been gusting from the southwest. It did.

When we set up here, our water pressure regulator blew out and was leaking from the diaphragm housing. I’ve been using a mini-Watts regulator made for RVs by Valterra. I haven’t used the household Watts regulator I built for our coach for a while because the hose adapter fitting was leaking where it’s swaged together. So I set up without a regulator on our fresh water supply. I found the water pressure here is quite high. I wrote about water pressure and regulators in this post.

Friday night I got up for a bathroom break at 4:30am. I unintentionally woke Donna up. Donna said, “What’s that sound?” I don’t have the best hearing – I have tinnitus from years of working in workshops, motorcycling racing, playing guitar and shooting guns. I said, “What sound?” She told me she could hear water running. She got up and checked our faucets, then told me it was coming from outside. I grabbed a flashlight and went out to investigate. I found our neighbor’s water supply was leaking at his regulator. I went back to bed – it could wait until later.

It turned out he had two leaks – one at the regulator and another one at the coach hose connection. I decided I needed to fix our Watts regulator pronto. Donna went out for a bike ride in the morning. After she returned, I drove into town to the Ace Hardware store. The store was fairly busy and all of the employees and almost all of the customers had face masks on – including me. I found the hose adapter I needed and repaired our regulator and installed it on our water supply bib.

I set up our Traeger wood pellet-fired smoker-grill and proceeded to spatchcock a 5 1/2-pound whole chicken Donna bought at Winco in Mesa. If you wonder what spatchcock means, see this post. I dry-rubbed it and had it on the Traeger while Donna was on her weekly Zoom call with members of her family. I cooked it breast side down for about 50 minutes. It was very windy out with wind gusts in excess of 30 mph. This affected the cooking time. Then I flipped it breast side up and set the Traeger to high – 450 degrees to crisp the skin. It cooked for another 18 minutes before the thigh meat registered 165 degrees.

Donna managed to prepare fresh green beans and rosemary-garlic roasted potatoes while on her call. It was a nutritious, delicious meal.

The temperature here has been higher than usual for this time of year, but the upper 70s are quite bearable! The wind has been relentless and I’m hoping it’ll taper off soon. The forecast for the week ahead calls for near record heat with temperatures in the low to mid 80s. The historical average high temperature for this time of year is 71 degrees. The nights cool down to upper 40s to low 50s, making it comfortable to sleep.

We paid for a full month here. I’m sure we”l find more points of interest in the area.

What’s That Smell?

We made it through another week of social distancing and mostly keeping to ourselves. I mentioned in my last post how Donna has been picking fruit here at Viewpoint Golf and RV Resort. Just about all of the sites have a citrus tree – mostly orange but also lemon and grapefruit trees. So many people left the park earlier in the season than usual, the fruit would have gone to waste. Donna asked on the park’s Facebook group if anyone would like her to pick the fruit on their trees. About half a dozen people responded with site numbers and gave her permission to pick as much as she wanted.

She picks more than we can use, so we put some on a table in front of our site and invite people to help themselves. Donna also posted a notice on the Viewpoint Facebook group – the fruit disappears quickly.

More people pulled out in the last week. The park now has more open sites than I’ve ever seen here. The north side of the 5100 row is completely empty and only two or three RVs are on the north side of the 5200 row – our row.

At this time of year, sites on the south side with the rig facing north are more desirable so direct sun isn’t coming through the windshield.

I’ve been spending a lot of time sitting in the shade of the coach reading books. One day, while sitting outside, I noticed an odor of propane. This happened before when we were in Bishop, California. At that time, I thought the smell originated at the pressure relief valve on our propane tank. I did a search on the Internet and found that this can happen if the tank pressure rises. The pressure rise may be normal if it’s due to high ambient temperatures or atmospheric changes. We had both when we were in Bishop, so I didn’t worry about it.

I wondered about it here though, because our tank was less than half full. The temperature is higher than what we’ve experienced for a while, but I didn’t think it would cause enough thermal expansion in a half-full tank to vent gas. When I noticed it again a couple of days later, I checked the tank level and knew we had a problem. We were down to less than a quarter tank and we hadn’t used propane for anything since we arrived here over three months ago. We only use propane when we’re dry camping or driving to run the refrigerator or maybe the hot water heater. So there was a leak.

Working on propane systems really isn’t my thing. It requires some equipment for leak detection. Sure, you can try the soapy water approach by spraying fittings or suspected leak areas with soapy water and watching for bubbles to form wherever it’s leaking. But then you have to have a way to pressure check the system after repair. Actually you apply a vacuum to the empty system and use a manometer to see if it holds vacuum. I didn’t want to do this myself – I didn’t want to buy stuff for what is probably a one-time repair. Plus, I don’t like messing with propane – I had a bad experience with a propane fire that went quickly out of control in the past, but’s a story for another time.

So I ended up calling around for mobile propane service. A few operations were shut down due to the pandemic, but I was able to get an appointment with 4-Points Mobile RV Service. They sent a guy out on Tuesday and he was able to find a leak at the pressure regulator diaphragm.

They had to order a replacement part. On Wednesday, they told me they would be here at 11am on Thursday to finish the repair.

This morning, Donna went out for a bike ride. She called me around 10:45am and told me she had run over something and had a flat tire. She was at Two-Wheel Jones bike shop and thought she would need to have a new tire put on. She didn’t have enough cash with her or her credit card to pay for it if that’s what they had to do. She said she would let me know if she needed a credit card.

Right about then, the 4-Points Mobile RV Service truck pulled up. The guy got to work right away. I called Donna back and told her I would bring her credit card to her while the work was being done on the coach so I could be back before he finished. I wanted to see the system test and I also had to pay the bill. I drove to Two-Wheel Jones and gave Donna her card, then returned. I got back just before he ran the system test.

He connected the manometer to the gas line at the refrigerator. It held vacuum for three minutes and passed the system integrity test. We’re back in business as soon as I can get the tank refilled with propane.

I have one dinner plate photo to share this week. It’s a bone-in chicken thigh Donna marinated in a something called pretty chicken marinade. I smoked the thighs on the Traeger wood pellet-fired smoker grill. Donna served it with sweet potato mash and green beans with a pat of butter.

Our plan is to pull out of here one week from today. The temperature hit 90 degrees yesterday and is forecast to reach the mid-90s today. The coming week shows upper 90s and low 100s. It’s time to get out of Dodge. Barring any unforeseen event, we’ll be in Springerville next Thursday afternoon where the temperature will be in the 70s to low 80s.

Day and Night

Like most folks, we’ve been lying low here at Viewpoint Golf and RV Resort. Other than grocery – and beer – runs we haven’t left the park. Well, Donna’s been out for bicycle rides, but she doesn’t stop anywhere.

For entertainment, Donna and I have been watching a series called Narcos. My middle daughter, Jamie, gifted us access to her Netflix account, so we downloaded the series and saw the final episode last night. Donna has been taking her laptop to the deserted pool/office area where she can get free wifi to download Netflix. We’ll start on Narcos Mexico next.

Speaking of wifi, I had a rather strange message from Verizon on my phone. My plan includes 15GB of high speed mobile hot spot on my phone – it’s called an “Unlimited” plan, but it isn’t really as it throttles to low speed after 15GB. The message I received from Verizon said I would have an additional 15GB of high speed hotspot on my phone from March 25th to April 30th. But here’s where it gets weird – they also provided a link to their website page “Corona Virus FAQ.” This page says the free additional data will not be displayed in my account online. Okay, so I have more data but I can’t see how much I actually have. Furthermore, my data usage cycle runs from the 11th of each month to the following month ending on the 10th.

So how does the “extra” 15GB figure into my data cycle? I’m also confused about which devices get extra data. Reading the FAQ, it looks like we should have “extra” data on each of our lines – we have three – Donna’s phone, my phone and the Jetpack. The FAQ doesn’t seem clear to me if each line gets 15GB or is the 15GB shared over all three lines? Inquiring minds want to know.

I got a couple of things off of my “to do” list. Nothing too big – I replaced the 48″ flourescent bulbs in the galley, I cleaned and conditioned the leather Euro-recliner and ottoman, I did a deep clean of the Weber Q grill. My biggest project was re-stringing the day/night shade in the window at the head of our bed.

The shade on this window is 30 inches wide and has four strings – the other window in the bedroom has two strings. The four-string repair wasn’t much harder than the two-string, but having done the two-string before, I had some experience to draw upon this time. It all went fairly smooth. I still had the tool that came with the first kit to draw the strings through the shades, it’s handy. The new kit didn’t come with the tool.

The day/night shades have two pleated shades – one is for privacy but allows light to filter through – the day shade – the other blocks light completely – the night shade. There’s a draw bar at the bottom of the shade. Pulling it down puts the day shade in place. There’s a second draw bar, pulling it down folds the day shade pleats at the bottom of the shade while drawing the night shade down. The draw bars are held in place by friction due to the way the strings are routed.

Inside the top bar, the strings are attached to springs. Tension from these springs create the friction where the strings go through bushings in the draw bars, allowing the shade to be held at various opening positions. You can have the shade all the way up, exposing the whole window or you can position the day or night shade anywhere from all the way up to all the way down and every place in between.

We had a traditional Easter dinner last Sunday. Donna prepped a rack of lamb with a fennel crust and I cooked it on the Traeger wood pellet smoker/grill. She served it with Brussel sprouts and buttered egg noodles.

We followed that with another Traeger dinner on Monday – lemon and herb marinated chicken thighs. Donna served it with grilled bok choy and jasmine rice.

On my last Costco run, I bought one and a half racks of babyback ribs, so I did my famous Memphis-style smoked ribs on Tuesday. It was more than Donna and I could eat, so we invited our friend here in the park, Joe, to stop by for take-out ribs and gave him the half rack.

Donna has been picking citrus here at the RV park. Many people left in a hurry and she got permission to pick and take grapefruit, oranges and lemons from various sites. We put some out for neighbors walking by to take on Sunday. They didn’t last long. She plans to pick some more for us and to share.

It’s beginning to heat up out here in the desert valley. Other than Saturday, when we had clouds and a few intermittent sprinkles, it’s been clear and in the mid to upper 70s. Most afternoons have had winds from the south-southwest gusting up to 20 mph. The winds are calmer today and we should see temperatures reaching the mid to upper 80s for the next week.

We plan to head for higher ground in two weeks – we will leave on April 30th. The temperature here is forecast to reach the 90s by then – the average high in June here in Mesa is 102 degrees. If all goes according to plan, well be in Springerville, Arizona for the month of May. Springerville is at an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level and will be 20 to 30 degrees cooler than here.

Minor Maintenance Tasks

We enjoyed another week as temporary residents of Mesa, Arizona. We’ve been coming here every year for the winter months since we hit the road – this is our fourth year here at Viewpoint Golf and RV Resort. From 2006 to 2009, we lived here in Mesa full-time in a sticks-and-bricks home about 3 miles away from Viewpoint.

I had a couple of minor projects to attend to last week. When I dumped our gray water tank, I noticed a slow drip coming out of the bottom of the plastic pan in the wet bay. Later, I went to see about taking the cover plate off the wet bay to inspect the water lines, but the drip had stopped and all was dry. The next day, I saw the drip again. Taking the cover plate off the wet bay involved removing 14 screws. Once I did that, I saw that I really only needed to remove 11 of the 14 screws. Three screws were attached to a stiffener board that came off with the plate. Next time I’ll know.

I found the source of the water drip. There’s a plastic fitting in the PEX fresh water line with a small valve and connector to supply the ice maker in our freezer. This fitting had a hairline crack and was leaking. I made a trip to Ace hardware and bought a new fitting. I had to replace a short section of PEX tubing and it was job done. I neglected to take any photos while I worked.

The other minor project was routine maintenance on Midget-San. Modern cars make it easy to forget how much maintenance we once had to perform on automobiles. Unlike modern cars with sealed bearings and lifetime lubricated ball joints, our 1972 MG Midget requires chassis lube on the front suspension components. There are zerk fittings on the ball joints and king pin links and trunnions. These need to be greased with NLGI #2 bearing grease.

To do this, I needed to raise the Midget – it sits only a few inches above ground level making it impossible for me to get underneath the car. I jacked the car up and supported the four corners with jack stands. I used a grease gun and a cartridge of grease to inject grease into the zerk fittings.

I also had ordered a new distributor cap and rotor along with an ignition wire set from RockAuto. Nowadays, cars have separate coils mounted directly on the spark plug, eliminating the distributor and ignition wires. Modern platinum or iridium spark plugs can last 50,000 miles or more. Not so on the 1982 Nissan A15 engine in Midget-San. It is equipped with an electronic ignition module, so there isn’t a set of breaker points to replace. This is the only electronically controlled item on the car. The distributor is otherwise an old-fashioned device with a vacuum advance mechanism to control ignition timing. The single ignition coil is a Bosch blue coil feeding high voltage to the center terminal of the distributor cap where the current then travels through the rotor to each ignition wire and on to the appropriate spark plug.

These parts can wear and need periodic replacement. The high voltage arcs from the rotor to the distributor cap terminals resulting in wear on both components. The ignition wires delivering high voltage to the spark plugs can break down, allowing the current to arc to ground rather than firing the spark plugs. As part of my preventive maintenance schedule, I replaced the cap, rotor and ignition wires. It’s a fairly easy and straightforward job.

Overall, the maintenance work was easy and didn’t take a lot of time or effort. These are the things you need to do to keep a 48-year-old car with a 38-year-old engine running smooth.

In my last post, I mentioned a new recipe I wanted to try. It was Smoked Paprika Chicken Legs with Chimichurri. I made a rub with paprika, coriander seeds, lime zest, salt and pepper and two tablespoons of olive oil. This created a paste-like rub that I massaged into the chicken leg quarters.

I set the Traeger wood-pellet fired smoker-grill to high (450 degrees). The chicken leg quarters cooked on the smoker for 45 minutes.

While the chicken leg quarters were cooking i made the chimichurri by putting a cup of parsley and a cup of cilantro along with jalapeno, onion, garlic cloves, fresh squeezed lime juice, olive oil, salt and pepper in a food processor and pulsed it until it was creamy. This was served directly on the chicken.

The result was tasty and it’s a recipe worth repeating. Next time, I think I’ll use bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs. The high setting on the Traeger made a pleasantly crispy and tasty skin on the chicken.

Our Superbowl Sunday plan had a bit of a hectic schedule. Donna had tennis in the morning and a clarinet lesson in the afternoon before we drove to Mike and Jodi Hall’s for food, drink and the game – and cigars for Mike and me. The day before, we went shopping at Winco foods. I looked at the babyback ribs there, but wasn’t impressed. The only babybacks they had were Hormel brand, frozen rock hard and they didn’t look very meaty. We tried Fry’s grocery and they didn’t have any at all! We then went to Basha’s where I found nice looking fresh (not frozen) babybacks.

I did my usual thing with two racks of ribs on the Traeger Sunday afternoon. We took them to Mike and Jodi’s place around 3:30pm. Jeff and Chrissy Van Deren were there along with Mike’s sister, Connie, and Jodi’s sister Jackie. Donna made stuffed mushrooms and a vegetable tray. Mike had a whole chicken on his smoker grill. We had plenty of food for all. It was a good time and we enjoyed the game.

The weather had been great all week with daily highs in the low 70s. The weekend was warmer and we hit 78 degrees on Sunday! But on Monday, a cold front moved over the area and we had a partly cloudy day with the high only reaching the low 60s. I think the warmest part of the day was late morning, then it got colder as the day wore on. Last night, the temperature dropped to 34 degrees and we have a freeze warning tonight. Cold temperatures with the highs only in the 50s are forecast for the next few days. As I type this, it’s clear and sunny outside but the temperature is only 50 degrees. This cold spell should break by Friday and we’ll be back in the 70s.

Reeling in the Years

Another week has flown by since I last posted. I wrote that post on a wet and dreary day. It’s been the opposite of that since then. Glorious, sunny days with blue skies and cool evenings. It’s hard to believe the first month of 2020 is coming to a close already. I have a theory about the perception of time accelerating as we grow older.

When we were 12 years old, our lifetime experience could be broken down into 12 increments, each spanning one year (this isn’t exactly true – most of us have little or no recollection of the first few years of our life). So, our internal perception of time revolves around a year being 1/12th of everything we know.

When we reach the age of 60, our lifetime experience can be broken into 60 equal intervals, each spanning one year. These intervals are now 1/5th of the perceived interval when we were 12 years old. A year represents a much smaller portion of our life experience, thus we perceive a year as a much shorter span of time. Therefore, for us old people, time really flies.

After the rain cleared up, Scott started working on our coach on Wednesday. A painter’s work revolves around prep. The quality of the work is a reflection of the preparation. I’ve had car painters tell me that actually shooting the paint is the easy part. Getting the surface prepared and the final cut and buff are what make the job come out great. Scott spent three days preparing the surface for paint. He had to remove the clear coat from the areas where it was failing. To get the new finish to adhere, the old clear coat had to be cut back to provide a good, solid margin. He did this with a razor blade and sand paper. It looked like tedious work.

To match the paint color, he had to remove one of the basement compartment doors that had all four colors on it. He took it to a paint shop where they could color match with a special camera and computer program. He was ready to start applying paint on Friday.

Saturday afternoon he was ready to start the finish work. He had to block-sand the clear coat, then buff it with a polishing wheel. He ran out of daylight and had to finish up Sunday morning. The finished job looks great.

Meanwhile, we went about our business. Donna started practicing new music on her clarinet. The next Viewpoint Concert Band performance is February 16th and they have a whole new repertoire to learn for that performance.

I learned something new about UPS deliveries. Apparently, they have a new protocol where they only make one attempt to deliver a package in some areas. If you aren’t home, they take the package to a UPS Access Point. I had a package come on Thursday while we were out. There was a note left on our door. After I deciphered the driver’s chicken scratch note, I figured out that I had to wait until the next day to pick up my package at a nearby CVS pharmacy. Seems a little crazy to me, but I suppose the agreement to accept packages at CVS will bring customers into the store to potentially shop while they’re there.

On Saturday morning, Donna and I drove Midget-San to Gilbert where we were meeting our friends, Sara and Howard Graff, for the farmers’ market. They actually pulled up next to us at a stoplight on Gilbert Road at Baseline on the way there. What timing!

Gilbert used to be little more than a crossroads in the desert. Urban sprawl has made it part of metro Phoenix today. Everything from Glendale to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler is one big area of development. It’s hard to tell when you cross into another city limit. Gilbert has gone from being a one-horse cowboy town to a trendy place to shop and eat. There are numerous restaurants along the old Main Street.

We strolled and shopped at the farmers’ market. They had a fairly large number of vendors there with plenty of fresh produce.

There was a separate market place on the north side of the old town for arts and crafts. After walking through all of the markets, we checked out a few places to eat and settled on OHSO Brewery and Distillery. We had a short wait, then were seated out on the covered patio. Their food was excellent – we were all very happy with the meals we ordered. On the weekends, brunch from 10am to 2pm includes a 10-ounce beer or a mimosa when specific menu entrees are ordered. My entree included a drink, but Donna commandeered my mimosa when I ordered a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary was made with half jalapeno vodka and half horseradish vodka. It was spicy and it included a stick of house-made beef jerky.

Speaking of beef jerky, on Friday, I trimmed and cut beef top-round steaks across the grain into strips. I had them marinating in the refrigerator overnight. Saturday afternoon I set up the Traeger wood-pellet fired smoker-grill and set it to 180 degrees. I started with two pounds of beef. Four and a half hours later, I had one pound of beef jerky after the meat had smoked and dehydrated. It’s pretty good. I’ll make an adjustment or two to the recipe and reduce the smoke time to four hours when I make it again.

On Sunday evening, my middle daughter, Jamie, and her man, Francisco came over from the west side to go to dinner. Francisco’s birthday is today, but we celebrated early with dinner at the Black Angus. I worked at Stuart Anderson’s Black Angus back in the ’70s in San Diego. That’s where I met my first wife – Jamie’s mother. The Black Angus isn’t what it used to be, but we enjoyed the meal and had a good time together.

Here are a few other good meals we enjoyed over the last week courtesy of Donna’s culinary skills. First up is coconut curry wild Alaskan sockeye salmon with bok choy served with forbidden rice. A favorite for sure.

Another seafood dish was served up Thursday night. Donna grilled shrimp with pesto served with grilled mushrooms, onions, peppers and zucchini with cauliflower risotto on the side.

Yesterday, I prepped chicken leg quarters. Later today, I’ll put them on the Traeger. I’m trying something new to me – smoked paprika chicken legs with spicy herb chimichurri. I’ll let you how that works out.

Although a cooler day with clouds are in the forecast for tomorrow, we can expect the favorable weather to continue with highs in the 70s through the weekend. We’re getting plenty of exercise – one day last week I had almost 18,00 steps on the pickleball court!

Two Nights Out

We pulled out of Mission Bay RV Resort on Sunday as planned and left San Diego. I took my time packing up – I was still feeling a bit under the weather as I’m having a hard time shaking the head cold that hit on Christmas day.

We have an inline dual canister water filtration set-up that I always use to filter fresh water coming into the coach. I’ve had a few people question whether it’s necessary when they are connected to city water. When we arrived in San Diego, I put a fresh, new sediment filter in the first stage canister. This filter element is made from spun polyester and was pure white. When I disconnected the water supply, I removed the filter element. This is what three months of city water left in the sediment filter.

You can see the amount of rust and dirt particles it captured. The city water supply may be sanitized through the use of chlorine, but whenever a line is opened up anywhere along the supply route, dirt can enter and old valves may be rusty. This is why I always filter our water. I change out the sediment filter every three months. The second stage is an activated carbon block filter that removes chemicals and odors and I change that after six months.

We made the usual eastbound run on I-8 over the three summits in the Laguna Mountains – Laguna Summit, Tecate Divide and Crestwood Summit. Each summit is over 4,000 feet above sea level and there was snow on the side of the road. We exited I-8 at the Imperial Dunes Recreation Area – about 10 miles west of the Arizona border.

Our friends, Jeff and Deb Spencer (Rolling Recess), were boondocking there off American Mine Girl Road. Donna had texted Deb and she met us on the side of the road and led us to their piece of desert. Donna mentioned to me that when she tells people we’re going to spend the night “out in the desert,” some people ask how do we get “out in the desert?” First of all, you need to know the rules for the area you’re in. At Imperial Dunes, some of the public land requires a camping permit. Other areas of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) are open for free dispersed camping.

Again, it’s public BLM land and it’s free, but there are rules. You can’t just bushwhack your way into an unmolested area – you have to stick to established paths. Of course most of those paths became established after someone starting driving in and others followed. Many of the points of entry are created by BLM personnel and some have markers and numbers. So, these paths are dirt two-track trails that lead away from roads and civilization. You are allowed to camp for up to 14 days, but you are supposed to leave the site as you found it – no improvements or structures are allowed.

Many people camp in groups in this area and use their ATVs or sand buggies to explore. I think they like the comradery and sense of safety in numbers. Others prefer solitude and keep plenty of space around them. We usually keep our distance – about a quarter of a mile is good separation – unless we’re with friends. In this instance, we camped near Jeff and Deb’s rig.

When we did the RAGBRAI event with them in 2017, I made Memphis-style babyback ribs one night on the Traeger for us to share. Jeff decided he needed a Traeger wood-pellet-fired smoker/grill. The thing is, they have a fifth-wheel RV, so storing a Traeger is problematic. He could store it in a basement compartment, but it would be a pain to remove and set up and put it away again. So he mounted it on the rear rack on their trailer.

He used an aluminum drip pan as a heat shield to keep excessive heat from reaching his bicycle or the rear of the trailer. He has a thermocouple he puts on the pan and an alarm set to notify him if the temperature exceeds 135 degrees. Smart set-up!

I kept my visit with Jeff and Deb brief as I wasn’t feeling good and didn’t want to infect anyone. Donna visited for a while. Later Jeff brought us a plate with St. Louis spare ribs he cooked on his Traeger. Yummy! Thanks, Jeff!

Monday morning we rolled out of there and continued east on I-8. We found a new Pilot/Flying J Travel Center had opened at Tacna – about 40 miles into Arizona. I topped up our tank there. We continued east past Casa Grande where I-8 merges with I-10 and took the first exit at Sunland Gin Road in Eloy. I needed to have the oil changed and chassis lubed on the coach. The Cummins ISL diesel engine holds 28 quarts of oil. I don’t change the oil because I can’t deal with seven gallons of waste oil!

Last year, Speedco was bought out by Love’s Travel Stops. I wasn’t too happy with their service in Denver. I’ve used the Eloy Speedco several times before. Love’s ownership hasn’t been an improvement. They’ve raised their prices and the employees seem indifferent and lacking motivation. The good news was, I didn’t have to drop the trailer and there was no wait. They had me pull in over the lube pit with the trailer still with us. We were in and out in about half an hour!

From there, we backtacked a bit through Stanfield and headed north on AZ347 toward Maricopa to Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino to spend the night. The paved RV lot was a little crowded but we found a new graded dirt lot. This large lot was level and only had one motorhome and one tractor-trailer rig in it. We set up for the night.

Shortly after we set up, another RV arrived – a truck pulling a small fifth-wheel trailer. You would think that a lot with a few acres of open space would allow him to give everyone some space. For some reason, he set up right next to us.

I don’t mean to be unsociable, but I don’t understand what he was thinking.

It was cold overnight – the temperature might have been down to the 30s. We had the heat pump on before we went to bed and it’s back on again this morning. The high today will barely break 60 degrees. That’s how we’ll end the second decade of the millennium. Tomorrow we’ll welcome the 20s – hopefully with a roar!

We’ll head to Viewpoint Golf and RV Resort this morning. We plan to pick up Donna’s new Trek Dual Sport 2 bicycle this afternoon and settle in for another three-month stay.

I Can See Clearly Now

I haven’t been posting much lately as much of my time is spent dealing with the estate of my late step-dad, Ken Keller. Donna and I traveled up to his house to box stuff up for donation. We met my brother, Eddie and his wife, Rachel, there last Saturday and got much done. The house is in escrow and the buyer wants to close quickly, but also wants to negotiate along the way. I’ve made a couple of concessions, but now it’s time to move forward.

I was stymied for a while because I didn’t have the certified death certificates. The funeral home that ordered them for me from Riverside County just put them in an envelope and dropped them in the mail with regular postage. No tracking or priority. If I’d known they were going to do that, I would have gladly paid the $8 or so for a trackable Priority Mail delivery. After 10 days, they finally agreed that these documents were lost in the mail. They ordered four more certificates.

They called me on Tuesday and said they had the certificates and were sending them via courier to their San Diego County location in east El Cajon. I drove there on Wednesday and finally had the certificates in hand. Now I could move forward.

I had an Affidavit of Death of Trustee drawn up to allow me, as successor trustee, to handle the sale of the house. I couldn’t file the affidavit without a certified death certificate. Here’s what I find a little crazy about that. The certified death certificates are issued (at a cost to the estate) by Riverside County. The affidavit needs to be filed and registered by Riverside County. So, I pay them to issue me the certificate, then I submit an affidavit with the certificate back to them and they register it for another fee. Typical government racket.

Next I had to go to Wells Fargo Bank where Ken had his account. Again, I needed a certified death certificate to take over the trust bank account. This was a lengthy process and I spent nearly two hours with a banker. With that done, I can fund the trust with the proceeds from the sale of the house. Hopefully, things will get simpler from this point.

I also took care of a couple of projects over the past week. I mentioned before about the alternator on Midget-San overcharging the battery. The alternator is internally regulated, so it had to be replaced. Parts for the Nissan A15 engine in our Midget are easy to find and relatively cheap. I was surprised to find an AC-Delco remanufactured (in the USA) alternator at RockAuto for only $36!

The alternator charges the battery while the engine is running. The charging voltage will vary depending on the state of charge of the battery. As the battery becomes fully charged, the internal resistance of the battery rises and the charging voltage will drop. The old alternator was charging between 15.5-volts and 16.0 volts. This is too high regardless of the state of the battery charge. The new alternator charges between 13.6-volts and 14.5-volts. Much better.

The other project was something that only required me to write a check. The front side windows on our coach were fogged. These are double-pane windows. When the seal between the glass panes is compromised, moisture can condense between the panes. When the windows warm in the sun, fog forms and obstructs the view through the glass. A company called Auto Glass Boss came out to our site here at Mission Bay RV Resort and resealed the glass. They removed the windows, separated the panes, cleaned the glass thoroughly and installed new sealant. The glass is so clear now, it looks like there’s no glass there at all!

We had a major change in the weather here. On Tuesday night, rain moved in with a cold front. We had a blustery day Wednesday with periods of rain all day. The temperature only reached 60 degrees. Yesterday was partly cloudy and cool – in the mid 60s. We should have clear skies and mid to upper 60s for the weekend, but more rain is forecast to arrive by Thanksgiving.

I’ll close this post with a couple of dinner plates Donna prepared. First up is a coconut curry salmon dish with cashews that she made last week. It was spicy and very good – a keeper for sure.

Cool Stuff at Gillespie Field

In my last post, I mentioned an issue I had with Midget-San’s oil pressure. The replacement oil pump I ordered came from RockAuto on Tuesday afternoon. I’d been in touch with Bill Masquellier about doing the work at his place in El Cajon. I met Bill when he was working at British Auto Repair and replaced the rear hub/axle seal on the Midget. I later found out he was only filling in there temporarily while another mechanic was on an extended vacation. Bill is very knowledgeable on British cars and also has experience with engine swaps. He knows the Datsun/Nissan line of engines.

I was to meet Bill at the Gillespie Field Cafe – a small cafe at the airport in El Cajon – at 10am on Thursday. I arrived early as I had made allowances for traffic but managed to have smooth sailing eastbound on CA52. I parked in front of the cafe at 9:30am and took a walk. I saw an interesting car in front of a hangar and met the guy working on it. It was an Intermeccanica Omega – an Italian car made in the late ’60s with a Ford 289 V8 engine. They only made 33 of these. While I was talking to the guy, I saw Bill drive his Austin-Healey Sprite in. Bill phoned me and directed me to another hangar on the west side of the airport.

He opened one of the hangar doors and I parked Midget-San inside. I immediately noticed a number of covered cars along with and airplane and lots of parts in the hangar. We opened the hood (bonnet) on Midget-San and while the engine cooled, Bill gave a me a tour. First off, he showed me a 1928 Hudson. He explained that the hangar and the cars inside belonged to his brother-in-law, John. John bought the Hudson when he was in high school and it was his daily driver in the 1960s.

John has a fascination with cars designed and built by Ettore Bugatti. Bugatti’s first design was a small car. He drew up plans for every piece of the car and the engine as well. But he didn’t have the money to actually build the car. So, he sold the plans to Peugeot who then manufactured the car from 1905 to 1916 and called it Bebe. There were two 1913 Bebes in the hangar. Then Bill pulled back a car cover to reveal a mint condition 1935 Bugatti. It’s one of the top examples in the world and has to be valued around a million bucks!

There was another Bugatti – an all-aluminum 1938 that was in pieces being restored. This car only weighed around 2,200 lbs and had 200 horsepower making it one the fastest cars on the road at that time. Cool stuff.

Bill quickly pulled the alternator and oil pump from the Nissan A15 engine in Midget-San. I remarked how surprised I was to find the pump in stock at RockAuto. Bill told me this oil pump is used in at least three Nissan engine families and is a fairly common part. That made sense. We primed the pump and reassembled everything with a new oil filter and fired it up. The oil pressure came up within a couple of seconds. Much better!

Bill put a volt meter on the battery to make sure nothing went awry when the alternator was removed and discovered it was over-charging. The alternator was supplying over 15.5 volts. It has an internal regulator that must be bad. This will eventually fry the battery – the charging voltage should never exceed 15-volts and ideally would be around 14.2 to 14.4-volts. I’ll have to replace that next. This is what happens when you have a 48-year-old car with a 39-year-old engine.

Across from the hangar is the Allen Airways Flying Museum. The museum is owned by Bill Allen – a good friend of Bill M. Bill asked me if I was interested in a private tour of the museum. He had the keys and we entered the closed museum. There are a lot of interesting pieces of aeronautical history there. I saw a couple of Stearman Biplanes in the museum hangar and told Bill I frequently see two Stearmans fly over Mission Bay Park, almost daily. I described them and he told me one of them was in the corner of the hangar and the other – a orange-yellow one was a rental plane that sees almost daily use.

The other Boeing Stearman in the hangar was a beautifully restored silver plane with a blue stripe down the side and blue wing bottoms. It had tail number N-3188. This was the last plane owned and flown by Steve McQueen!

Steve McQueen requested number 3188 – it was his ID number when he was at reform school in Chino. Bill Allen bought the plane and completely restored it.

On Friday, Donna and I drove up to Sun City and cleared some items from Ken’s house. I also met with a realtor and we discussed marketing the property and a realistic valuation. The realtor is Sherry Dodson and she has a track record for the gated community Ken’s house is in. She’s sold around 10 homes per year there for several years. She had good comps to establish a realistic value. Setting the price too high could result in problems with a buyer obtaining financing. We needed a number that would appraise without leaving money on the table. After an hour or so, we came up with a price and a plan.

Saturday was a fine day. Donna and I rode our bikes along the Bayside Walk to Mission Beach. Along the way at Crown Point, we saw a large number of row boats for crew racing. It appeared to be a large event for mostly junior rowers. The crew teams looked to be high school age or maybe college. I’m not very good at guessing ages anymore – they all look young.

Saturday night, Donna marinated a flank steak and served it with baked potato and roasted brussels sprouts. Delicious!

Monday was Veterans Day and another fine day. We took a drive in Midget-San out to Cabrillo Monument on Point Loma. We made a stop at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Last night, Donna tried a new recipe for a baked pasta dish with Italian sausage crumbles and broccolini. She’s used garbanzo bean rotini which has more protein than regular pastas. It was very good, though not something we would have often because of all the cheese and cream!

This morning I finalized a counter-offer on Ken’s house and it looks like we are moving forward on the sale. We ended up within $2,000 of the asking price and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that we get a favorable inspection result and appraisal.

The weather forecast for the week ahead looks great. It might be slightly cooler with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and overnight lows in the mid 50s. That’s November in San Diego!

Stuck in the Middle

I feel like I’ve been spinning my wheels without gaining any traction lately. The death of my step-dad threw me for a loop and as successor trustee, I have much to do. But, there’s a hitch. I had durable power of attorney (POA) for his financial affairs. However, the POA is only applicable while he was living. The POA would allow me to make financial moves on his behalf if he was incapacitated. Now that he’s no longer with us, the POA is meaningless. That’s where the trust comes into play. The thing is, I cannot make a move as successor trustee until a death certificate is recorded with the county and I have certified copies. That’s the sticking point – I don’t have copies yet.

Once I have the certificate, I’ll open a new bank account for the trust. I’ve already obtained an EIN for the account. Then we can start converting assets and fund the trust and also resolve any debts. Some things that should be easy aren’t so easy. For example, I’ve tried to cancel his cable TV service. The cable company, Frontier, won’t do it unless I have his secret four-digit PIN. I don’t have his PIN and have no way of getting it. They’re happy to keep receiving the automated payment he set up. I’ll get it figured out.

Meanwhile Donna and I have been getting back into a more usual routine. The weather has been unusually warm for this time of year. The week before last, we rode our bicycles to Pacific Beach. After cruising up the boardwalk and making a stop at the bike shop, we went to Kono’s Cafe for lunch. Kono’s is right across from Crystal Pier – it was Tug’s Tavern back in the day. They have a patio deck across Ocean Boulevard on the north side of the pier overlooking the beach and ocean. We dined alfresco and watched the surfers while we enjoyed our lunch.

On such a warm day – the temperature reached 90 degrees – I expected the beach to be crowded. But, as you can see in the photos, the beach crowd was light. On the way back to Mission Bay RV Resort, I snapped a picture on the north side of Mission Bay – called Sail Bay – looking southeast toward Riviera Drive. There weren’t many people there either.

A week ago Saturday, we drove Midget-San up to the Cuyamaca Mountains and the town of Julian. We went to an event called Belly Rumble. It was at the Menghini Winery and was put on by a group of San Diego British Car Clubs. They had food and drink, an informal car show for British marques and belly dancers!

The winery was a few miles outside of town. On the way back, we stopped in Julian – a small town with a population of around 1,500 people. Julian is known for apples – specifically apple pie. We found the usual throngs of weekend tourists in town and long lines for apple pies at the bakery.

When I started the Midget to leave the winery, the oil pressure was very slow to build. In fact, the gauge showed zero PSI for over a minute before it built pressure. I was about to give up and call for an expensive tow, then it suddenly came up. It’s usually a little slow, but climbs within 10 seconds or so. I suspect an oil pump or pressure relief issue. This is not good. Left unchecked, it will eventually lead to bearing damage.

I talked to Bill from British Auto Repair – he’s the mechanic who replaced my hub/axle seal. He’s familiar with the Nissan A15 engine swap in Midgets and knows our car. He told me something I didn’t know. The Nissan A15 engine has an external oil pump. The pump is built into the oil filter flange on the side of the engine and can be easily replaced without pulling the engine or dropping the oil pan. This is good news! Outside of engines with dry-sump oil systems, I can’t think of another application with an external oil pump. Usually they’re located at the bottom of the engine block near one end of the crankshaft and, at minimum, the oil pan needs to be removed to access it.

I ordered a new oil pump from Rock Auto – an amazing online parts store. The had oil pumps in stock for this obscure 38-year-old engine. I’ll take the car to Bill’s place out in El Cajon once I have the part and replace the pump. We have Ken’s car still, so we’ve been using his Kia Soul for transportation and Midget-San has been parked in the trailer for the past two weeks.

The hot, dry weather spell has passed and we are experiencing a more “normal” San Diego climate. The daily highs are in the low to mid 60s with overnight lows in the upper 50s. The 10-day forecast calls for more of the same with little chance of rain. The cool nights are just right for sleeping with a window open and a down comforter on the bed.

Wheels, Tires and Surf

I’m staying busy here in San Diego. In my last post I mentioned dropping the Midget off for repairs at British Auto Repair near the Sports Arena. I also had ordered new wheels and tires on Monday. The current tires had good tread but they were five years old and seemed like the rubber had hardened.

I was also getting a vibration that was worse at 55-58 MPH. Usually when you feel a vibration at a speed in 50 – 60 MPH range, it indicates a wheel balance problem. But this vibration would be more pronounced intermittently. It seemed like an imbalance or out-of-round condition of two or more wheels would align in phase at times and the steering wheel and shift lever would shake. The wheels on Midget-San are the original Rostyle stamped steel wheels – nearly 40 years old. Cosmetically they looked brand new, but I had no idea if they had suffered previous damage and had been straightened.

Back in the 1960s and early 70s, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) had a number of classes to race British cars in. Back then it seemed like every British race car was shod with eight-spoke cast alloy wheels called minilites. When I was a teenager driving an Austin-Healey Sprite I lusted after a set of minilites, but they were out of my budget. Those wheels not only looked sharp, they were also lightweight. Wheel weight is an important factor in a vehicles handling characteristics. Wheels are what auto engineers call “unsprung” weight. Unsprung weight is any weight that’s not supported by the vehicles suspension, such as wheels, brake discs and axles. These components are more or less hung from the suspension springs and shocks.

Nowadays minilite style wheels are available from a few manufacturers. I ordered a set of Minator minilite style alloy wheels from Moss Motors with free shipping on Monday. I also ordered a set of Toyo tires from Amazon Prime to mount on the new wheels. I was pleasantly surprised when the wheels and tires were delivered together from UPS Wednesday afternoon!

Wednesday evening Donna took a flight to Albany, New York enroute to her parents house in Bennington, Vermont. She’ll be there for a week helping her dad rehab from a broken hip. So, I’m a bachelor for the week.

Thursday morning I called Discount Tire to see how much they would charge to mount and balance the new tires and find out when they could it. When I told the guy I had the new wheels and tires already, he put me on hold and didn’t pick up in the next five minutes. Obviously they weren’t interested in doing the job. I hung up. Next I called Victor’s Tire and Auto Detail shop up the hill from here on Clairemont Drive. They said they would do it for a total of $60 out-the-door and to come in anytime. I drove up there – two guys on two tire machines mounted the tires then balanced them and I was on my way within 15 minutes!

I put the wheels away in the trailer, then my phone rang. It was British Auto Repair. They had finished the axle/hub seal repair. I wasn’t expecting it for another day or two. They also told me that the gasket and O-ring was all that was needed – I had caught the leak early enough to avoid damage to the brake shoes and there was no hub damage. So a repair that could have cost as much as $600 only came to $200. Good news indeed.

I took an Uber to the shop and drove Midget-San back to Mission Bay RV Resort and parked next to the trailer in the overflow lot. I was able to change the wheels and had the car ready to go in no time.

I took a test drive up to Torrey Pines and back. Smooth. No sign of the vibration I could feel before. The car drives better and I think it looks better too!

Friday I drove Ken’s car up to Hemet to visit him and check on his progress at Ramona Rehab Center. It’s a little over a 90-minute drive without any traffic tie-ups. He seemed to be doing better and was in fine spirits. But, they had taken another chest x-ray that morning and were waiting for the results. The doctor thinks he’s getting fluid in his lungs again. I still haven’t heard anything but I intend to follow-up this afternoon.

At happy hour at the Offshore Tavern and Grill last night I heard about a surfing contest at La Jolla Shores this morning. I headed up there at 10am to check it out. The Windansea Surf Club had their Menehune Juniors contest. I hung out on the beach and watched for a while – some of the kids are pretty good!

The weather has been fantastic and we can expect more of the same in the coming week. Today will be the last day I can say I’m 62 years old. My 63rd birthday is tomorrow.
